Downers Grove: The Surprise Standout

Naperville: Depth and Variety
Catch 35 is the seafood destination in the western suburbs. Raw bar, fresh fish, polished service. Business dinners, celebrations, in-laws-are-in-town occasions. Reliably excellent.
Allegory is one of the newer spots and quickly becoming a standout. Seasonal menu, creative cocktails, intimate room. It has the sensibility of a Logan Square restaurant transplanted to the suburbs — in the best way.
Meson Sabika serves Spanish tapas in a historic mansion surrounded by gardens. The patio on a summer evening is arguably the single best outdoor dining experience in the western suburbs. The food is solid; the setting is exceptional.
Hinsdale and Surrounds: Polished and Consistent
Vistro Prime is Hinsdale’s top restaurant — Italian-American fine dining with a strong wine list and refined atmosphere. It’s where the town goes for occasions.
Fuller House is the more casual option. Gastropub with good cocktails and an unpretentious vibe. Hinsdale’s version of a neighborhood bar, which means it’s nicer than most restaurants.
The Restaurants Worth a Special Trip
Vie, Western Springs. Chef Paul Virant’s farm-to-table American restaurant. This is a nationally recognized establishment — featured in national food publications, known for its preservation-focused cooking techniques. It happens to exist in a tiny suburban village. Vie is, by most informed assessments, the best restaurant in the western suburbs. Book ahead.
Prasino, La Grange. Organic and sustainably sourced, but not at the expense of flavor. The brunch is particularly strong. A good option for buyers touring La Grange.
Elmhurst: The Rising Scene
Elmhurst’s downtown dining scene has grown significantly and skews younger than the BNSF corridor towns. Pazzi di Pizza does excellent Neapolitan-style pizza. Several breweries have opened in recent years. It’s a suburb worth watching — both as a place to eat and as a real estate market.
